Recently a rumor has surfaced. According to Jeff Sneider, writer of The Wrap, Marvel is very close to making sure that Miles becomes a reality in the cinematic Marvel universe. On an episode of Meet The Movie Press podcast, he explains:
“Listen, this is not set in stone guys, but I’m telling you right now, Spider-Man’s not going to be white. Spider-Man’s not going to be white. I’m 95% sure. Spider-Man’s going to be most likely black. But there’s a chance he could also be Latino. 95% sure, not white.”
Now he doesn’t go on to say that it is in fact Miles Morales, but given the fact that he could be Latino or black it seems that all signs are pointing to the Ultimate Spider-Man.
I pray to Odin that Marvel Studios takes the character is this direction. The Studio has already made great cultural strides by announcing a Black Panther and Captain Marvel film, why stop the momentum? Having a black/Latino spider-man would be incredible and will no doubt add much needed diversity to the dominate white line up. Also, there is no reason why Peter Parker could not be black. After all we are getting a black Johnny Storm in this summer’s Fantastic Four. Honestly, it doesn’t matter. As long as the characters in the films are true to the ones we know and love from the comics, I don’t see any problems.
That being said, we know Peter Parker. In the past ten years we’ve had how many films with him swinging through the city streets, facing financial and romantic woes, worrying over his aunt, bearing the grief and guilt of Uncle Ben’s murder and of course, wise cracks? They are great and they are fun but they have been done. Repeatedly. It’s time for a new face and a new character. New supporting cast. New threats. New Powers (spider camouflage and spider sting). But keep the wise cracks. Seriously. Black or White. Peter or Miles, Spider-Man has got to crack some jokes around his enemies! In the end, I'm just happy Spider-Man is back home with his Marvel family.
