Since the announcement was made Marvel that would share the film rights to Spider-Man with Sony, I sighed with relief. There would be no Amazing Spider-Man 3. No Paul Giamatti trapped in side of a tank that I'm told is supposed to resemble a "rhino". No weird Aunt May solo film or a Sinister Six film. I'm sorry. I know many of you were looking forward to that but...Oh my God. NO. Even if they did have Cabin in the Woods directer Drew Goddard at the helm, that many villains sounds like the offspring of Batman & Robin and Spider-Man 3. According to the Latino Review, maybe we can have our cake and eat it too.
Latino Review is reporting that Drew Goddard will now write and direct the new Spider-Man film slated for 2017. The reports also includes these plot points:
It's not an origin film. Thank the Maker. How many times can we see Peter being bitten by a spider and watching his uncle murdered? He'll be Spider-Man from the get go and will be in high school and may be played by a young unknown actor. Which gives them a chance to have an actor grow into the series "ala Harry Potter".
Iron Man and The Avengers. The plot will also have Peter facing off against Iron Man and/or trying to get his approval to be an Avenger; like an "audition". I do like this angle as it is a nod to the relationship that he and Tony had in the comics.
Now, I did say that I would be against a Sinister Six film but I am totally 100% down for Goddard to direct. Apart from developing Six, he is also one of the writers and producers of the Netflix series Daredevil; he has a understanding of the Marvel Universe. He co-wrote and directed Cabin in the Woods, World War Z and episodes of Lost, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Lost. With those kind or credentials, my hopes for Spider-Man are swinging pretty high.
