When people think of the Frank Castle, they can't get past the fact that he's a killer. To some, he's just another murderer out to kill people because of how he lost his family. There is absolutely a good amount of truth to this. If not for the death of his family (caused by the deal he made with an otherworldly being), it's doubtful that Frank Castle becomes the Punisher. The Punisher is a murderer. It's also true that he is also a vigilante. But is he any different than Batman? I vote that not only is he just as much the hero that Batman, I will go on record by saying that people are safer when he is around.
Batman is arguably the most popular hero of all time. Sure he doesn't have any powers, but he makes up for it with a plethora of cool and sophisticated weapons. If the cool gadgets weren't enough, Batman has a bad attitude and he talks to Superman like Superman doesn't have "Kill you with my laser eyes from space" powers. All of these qualities make Batman more appealing than The Punisher. What Punisher has that Batman doesn't is a psychotic nemesis that has killed more people than some wars. Every time Batman captures Joker, he brings him to jail and for some reason everyone is shocked when Joker escapes. This isn't like Joker has only escaped once or twice. Everyone escapes from Arkham. That prison is a joke.
Joker is one of the most evil people to ever appear in comics. And Batman won't kill him "Because it would be too easy". That seems like a good reason to me. It's cliché to say, but every time Joker kills someone, their death is on Batman's hands. Then there's all the people he has tortured. Let's take Commissioner Gordon and his daughter for example. He sexually assaults Barbara, kidnaps Gordon, strips him naked, and makes him look at pictures of his daughter's naked body. What does Batman do after he catches Joker? He gives him another chance at redemption. This should have been The Joker's death. As ruthless as Batman is, he is very soft on his enemies at times.
Punisher does have a psycho named Jigsaw that Castle had running around. But this wasn't from a lack of trying. Punisher kills. Plain and simple. What Castle does is take the burden and throws it on his back so other people can live in the world with less murderers and rapists running around. Castle admits that what he does is actually wrong. He actually says that when the war is done, there will be one more bullet to settle all accounts. So he is aware that he isn't a good person. Batman may have a plan for everything, but how many people die, get kidnapped, get tortured, and threatened because villains know he won't take the final step and put the fear of god into them. Batman is too stubborn to realize that not every villain can be dealt with the same way because not every villain is the same. Some people can change and some people, well, "Some people just want to watch the world burn". One thing is for damn sure, if the Joker was in the Marvel universe, Punisher would have put a bullet in his head a long time ago. In fact, he almost did and guess who stopped Punisher from killing Joker? That's right; Batman.
The major thing that makes Punisher so special is the lack of civilian casualties when he finally goes after a target. While some people may say that there is "Acceptable loss" during war, Frank Castle finds that phrase deplorable. Punisher spends more time planning his movements than he actually does going in and attacking. Because of this, there is no loss of life that didn't deserve it. Even when the Punisher doesn't go in with a plan, he is so cautious that he won't use certain weaponry when he goes in blind. During a mission to save women from being used as sex slaves, Punisher couldn't just run in guns blazing. There were too many innocent women in the house. So he puts a sleeping agent in their food that knocked everyone out. Once everyone was sleep, he rescued the women and dealt with the men accordingly.
I'm sure in some way shape or form Castle would have gone back to punishing (no pun intended) the wicked in some way or another, but it more than likely would have been in a more legal and possibly less murderous way. Frank Castle is, will always be protector of the innocent. Whether it was during the Vietnam war or as the vigilante the Punisher. While I will agree murdering someone is wrong and heinous I have a question to ask you. Is it worst that the people are killed or that they are put in jail and let off to kill and rape again?
